If you’re ready to redo your loo, prepare to be pampered. The bathroom renovation trends making a splash right now are all about transforming this once utilitarian space into an expansive personal sanctuary.
Bathrooms are getting a spa makeover thanks to self-care-inspired design.
The ultimate goal is “to build in a spa-like feeling,” says Arpad Baksa, a New York City architect specializing in high-end residential restoration and renovation. Baksa sees homeowners trimming space from their living areas and using it to expand the square footage of their bathrooms, creating palatial escapes with calming, organic elements.
Here, Baksa walks us through four of the most prominent 2022 bathroom trends that will carry into next year and beyond. From ultra-customizable lighting to huge bath tubs and surfaces inspired by Mother Nature herself, they’re all about prioritizing self care. We’ve paired each concept with a hand-picked product from Kohler’s collection to help you start planning your own upgrades.
Spa-like extra large soaking tubs without the fuss of jets or claw-foot pedestals are the tub du ... [+] jour.
The trend that’s truly stealing the spotlight in bathrooms with no sign of retreating is the full-immersion soaking tub. Forget clawfoot tubs and whirlpools; instead consider big, minimalist egg-like shapes for your washroom centerpiece.
“The freestanding tubs people like right now are super modern and high-end, without jets,” notes Baksa. This at-home spa trend is based on peaceful stripped-down simplicity. It’s a signal that homeowners are ready to more mindfully sink into pure luxury without futzing.
Available in white or a subtle off-white called “biscuit,” Kohler’s three-foot deep Sunstruck tub is a statement piece that’s still neutral enough to design around. Its gentle curves and generous proportions embody the intersection of form and function that today’s soaking tub trend is all about. The Sunstruck is easy to install, too, so it’s a DIYer’s dream.
A mix of brushed and dark brass fixtures lends a bright, romantic feel.
Whatever your taste, there’s a trending metal finish to bring it to life in the fixtures of your at-home escape. If you skew bohemian, brushed brass might be your top choice. “Brushed or muted brass is still the preference for colorful bathrooms with a more romantic, bohemian style,” says Baksa. Meanwhile if you consider yourself a modernist, then reflective, almost invisible chrome may be the pick for you.
But the most popular fixture finish of all right now has a darker hue: inky bronze or black shower heads and faucets that can lend a traditional or modern farmhouse feel depending on their surrounds. Can’t pick just one? A mix of brushed brass and matte black, as seen in the photo above, will have you perfectly on-trend. Just remember that you’ll want to steer clear of previously popular polished brass, brushed nickel or any copper tones in order to maintain your bathroom renovation's value.
This elegant, oil-rubbed bronze pick emanates vintage farmhouse style; meanwhile its easy-to-install, leak-proof UltraGlide valves offer modern convenience. A simple design with shapely handles make this faucet a solid choice for the traditionalist. While the Worth option comes in two finishes, the dark bronze is definitely the top choice for the next few years.
Hidden vanity lighting and dimmable lights throughout help homeowners customize ambiance.
When you’re designing your at-home spa, ambience is key. So in today’s customized world, it’s no surprise that homeowners are taking a shine to customizable lighting solutions that let you control the illumination of the room. Depending on your mood, you can experience the intensity of the midday sun or the warmth of a sunset with the touch of a switch.
“Dimmable LED lights are what most of our clients are looking for,” says Baksa. “We’re also seeing hidden lighting or light strips embedded in the ceiling or behind the edge of the mirror to give an evenly lit halo effect.”
Kohler’s clever Maxstow medicine cabinet line features concealed LED lights along the sides, creating optimal lighting for makeup application and grooming tasks. Brightness at 1650 lumens with a minimum 90 CRI (color rendering index) means you’ll see yourself in consistent light with true color. And the lighting isn’t the only smart feature: Inside you’ll find an electrical outlet plus interior and back-of-door mirrors, as well as impressive storage capacity for the cabinet’s slim, 3.5-inch depth.
Rain showers are taking the place of the multi-shower head systems that were popular over the last ... [+] decade.
Standalone showers are still a popular choice, notes Baksa, even though they generally don’t take up any less space than a freestanding tub. But the modern shower is taking its cue from nature and saying goodbye to the previously trendy multiple jets emerging from the ceiling and walls. Renovators are keeping it simple with a drenching rain shower.
“Our clients are not choosing to install multiple shower heads anymore,” confirms Baksa. “They either want a rain shower that comes straight out of the ceiling or a handheld shower head. It’s one or the other.”
Bathroom Rain Bath & Shower Faucet Set This Kohler shower head is the next best thing to bathing in the tropical rains of Bali. Its patented Katalyst air-induction technology artfully mixes air and water to produce rainforest-like droplets in a consistent and powerful downpour. Right on trend, this one installs straight into the ceiling and is available in brushed brass, matte black and gleaming chrome finishes.
