John Hunter Nemechek chased down Carson Hocevar over the final laps at Kansas Speedway on Friday night, passing him as the white flag flew and Hocevar ran out of fuel. Nemechek got the win in his last-gasp chance at advancing in the NASCAR Truck Series playoffs. Hocevar coasted across in second place but needed the win to advance. Nemechek’s late pass allowed Christian Eckes to sneak into the final playoff spot, while three-time series champion Matt Crafton also was eliminated. Ryan Preece finished third while playoff contenders Zane Smith and Grant Enfinger rounded out the top five.

ATLANTA — Not since 2007, the year Michael Vick was indicted, have the Falcons entered a season expected to do so little. Since then, they’ve always had a quarterback. An NFL team with a quarterback is a team with a chance. Even in 2008, Matt Ryan’s rookie season, the feeling was that they’d…

NEW YORK — Derek Jeter returned to Yankee Stadium in front of a packed house with tens of thousands of people chanting his name. For the captain, that rowdy environment is home.

Two baseball players in the Dominican Republic have sued the Los Angeles Angels, charging the team breached verbal signing agreements made when they were young teenagers. The lawsuit says Angels representatives committed in 2018 when the boys were 14 to reaching a formal contract in mid-2020, when they would be old enough to sign a deal under Dominican law. It charges the club did not produce contracts by the new date. Informal agreements between professional clubs and people under age 16 are prohibited in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and other countries in the region, but people in the business say the practice is common. A Dominican court has scheduled a hearing for Oct. 30. The Angels have declined to comment on the matter.

CHICAGO — If anyone expected a great outcry from players after Major League Baseball announced major rule changes for 2023 on Friday — a pitcher’s clock, enlarged bases and severe restrictions on defensive shifts — well, just take the temperature of P.J. Higgins’ reaction as an example.

LOS ANGELES — The country's best sumo wrestlers practice kitty-corner from a 99-cent store in a Torrance strip mall. The floor in the rented dojo has just enough space for one ring made of a white plastic tarp with green foam pool noodles velcroed to the ground in a circular shape. Two paral…

Brigham Young athletics lifted the ban on the fan who Duke's volleyball team accused of directing racial slurs at a Black player during a game on its campus last month.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (AP) - Results from Argentine football:

Jeongeun Lee6 has the 36-hole lead after a 63 at the LPGA Tour event in Cincinnati. Lee6 hasn't had a top 10 in six months, and her only LPGA win was the 2019 U.S. Women's Open. But she's been working on her swing and it paid off at the Kroger Queen City Championship. Lee6 had her best score in nearly a year. One shot behind is Janet Lin. She had a 68. Ten players are within five shots of Lee6. Augusta National Women's Amateur champion Anna Davis will be around for the weekend. The 16-year-old had a 66.

Former Saints quarterback Drew Brees says New Orleans offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. has long been an “unsung hero” of the coaching staff. The Saints regular season opener at Atlanta marks the first game of a new era for a New Orleans offense that was designed by former head coach Sean Payton. When Payton retired after last season, the Saints promoted defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to head coach. Carmichael remained as offensive coordinator. But that title means more now that the new head coach oversees the defense. Carmichael says “a good percentage” of the offense has remained the same since 2006. But he says some aspects have evolved to suit current players.

The WNBA will crown a first-time champion when the Las Vegas Aces and the Connecticut Sun meet in the Finals starting Sunday. Both franchises have come close. Connecticut lost to Washington in the 2019 Finals and Las Vegas to Seattle a year later. It’s the Sun’s fourth trip to the finals, also advancing that far in 2004 and 05. The Aces also made the championship round in 2008 when the franchise was still in San Antonio and coach Becky Hammon was a player on the team.

Former President Barack Obama told the Harvard men’s basketball team that the sport taught him “it wasn’t just about me.” He wants the players to remember that when they move on to other, more consequential, endeavors. Obama said it's unlikely they will become the next LeBron James or Stephen Curry. But they have a better chance of becoming leaders in health care or business or civil rights. The former president graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991. He's the latest guest that coach Tommy Amaker has had speak to his team about the world outside of basketball.

Casper Ruud has reached his second Grand Slam final of the year by claiming a 55-shot point to end the first set of his U.S. Open semifinal and beating Karen Khachanov 7-6 (5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. The victory made Ruud 13-2 in major tournaments in 2022 and keeps alive his chance to rise to No. 1 in the rankings next week. The 23-year-old from Norway will face Carlos Alcaraz or Frances Tiafoe on Sunday for the championship. Alcaraz also has a chance to top the ATP rankings after the tournament.

Shortstop Wander Franco was activated from the 10-day injured list by the Tampa Bay Rays after missing two months with a right hamate bone injury that required surgery. The 21-year-old was batting second in a series opener against the AL East-leading New York Yankees. Franco went on the IL on July 10. A an injury rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Durham in mid-August was cut short in its first game when the former top prospect experienced a sore hand. He resumed play with Durham last Sunday and went 6 for 11 in three games.

Sean Payton isn’t on the sidelines this season, but he will have a great viewing spot for games on Sunday. The former New Orleans Saints coach will be spending his weekends on the Fox Sports set in Los Angeles as a studio analyst for their NFL shows. Starting Sunday, Payton will appear every week on “Fox NFL Kickoff,” which airs at 11 a.m. EDT and will rotate on “Fox NFL Sunday” with Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson. Whether this is a one-year deal or longer for Payton remains to be seen. He isn’t far from the minds of fans and league executives since he figures to be the top candidate for any opening.

The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms on a multiyear contract extension with safety Amani Hooker. Terms of the deal were not announced. The Titans open the season on Sunday while hosting the New York Giants. Hooker said the extension shows how much the Titans believe and trust in him. His job is to help Tennessee win a Super Bowl. Hooker is going into his fourth season starting 15 of 44 games since Tennessee drafted him out of Iowa in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. He is tied for third-most interceptions among safeties drafted in 2019.

Milwaukee right-hander Freddy Peralta was placed on the 15-day IL with inflammation in his throwing shoulder Friday night before the Brewers’ game against the Cincinnati Reds. The 2021 All-Star left during the third inning of his start Thursday night in Milwaukee against San Francisco due to fatigue in the shoulder. Milwaukee recalled right-hander Justin Topa from Triple-A Nashville. Peralta was put on the IL on May 23 with a strained right lat. Since being activated Aug. 3, he made seven starts, reaching six innings in two of them.

Two of the world’s best skippers are trying to regain their sea legs before falling further behind in SailGP’s race for the $1 million Season 3 championship. Britain’s Sir Ben Ainslie will return to the fleet this weekend in St. Tropez, France. He missed the previous regatta in Copenhagen after his foiling 50-foot catamaran was severely damaged when it hit a submerged object during practice. U.S. skipper Jimmy Spithill hasn't finished above fifth in four regattas this year. He finished a disappointing eighth in the nine-boat fleet in home waters in Chicago three regattas ago.

PITTSBURGH — Two days before their 2022 season opener, the Steelers announced their plan to pay tribute to late quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Each player will wear a sticker with the No. 3 on the back of his helmet, the jersey number of Haskins, who was struck and killed by a truck in early April.

Barcelona visits last-place Cádiz seeking a fifth straight win before its highly anticipated trip to Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week. Atlético Madrid hosts Celta Vigo and the winless Sevilla is also at Espanyol in Spain. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will be looking to continue his fantastic start to the season when Napoli hosts Spezia in Serie A. The two Milan teams are also in action, with AC Milan heading to Sampdoria and Inter Milan hosting Torino. Borussia Dortmund faces a quick rendezvous with former coach Marco Rose at Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

DALLAS — Regardless of what happens when No. 1 Alabama visits Texas on Saturday, the game will be overanalyzed until talking heads turn blue.

By now you've read my fantasy football team profiles, picked your sleepers, avoided busts and executed a draft (or several). I'm managing five fantasy teams myself — six if you count the Saturday Night Live fantasy league I'm in with my wife and stepdaughter where we draft hosts and musical …
