MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Police who will be on traffic control in and around Morgantown Saturday will have to deal with nighttime post-game traffic for the first time in four seasons.

WVU versus Kansas on both teams’ Big 12 opener kicks at 6 p.m. It will be around 10 p.m. when traffic begins to exit the parking lots close to Mylan Puskar Stadium.

WVU Police Department Chief Sherry St. Clair said officers are ready to get back to gameday operations.

“I think everyone is going to be excited and I think we’re going to have a really big crowd this time,” St. Clair said.

St. Clair expects there to be a learning curve for motorists and pedestrians due to the long pause in game action. She said slow down, be courteous and most of all be patient.

“I think traffic getting back into the routine, getting parked and situated,” St. Clair said. “It’s been awhile since everyone has been here for a night game.”

St. Clair said traffic officers are prepared for the dusk to dark anticipated conditions, but they want you to be prepared. Plan for lower visibility, slow moving traffic and a heavy flow of pedestrians downtown and near the stadium.

“They will have the intersections lighted, so pedestrians crossing can see,” St. Clair said. “We want to remind everyone to take your cue off the officer working the intersection.”

St. Clair expects fans to responsibly and safely enjoy pregame activities in moderation noting the late kickoff. She said fans can cheer for different teams and like different food, but they don’t have to be overbearing about either.

“We always ask you moderate how much you drink and make sure you’re drinking other fluids besides alcoholic beverages and police yourselves in the lot, that’s a big key to keeping incidents down,” she said.
